PPL - Private Pilot Licence

The PPL is the first and the most basic licence obtained by pilots. Since the PPL is attained by students with no prior flight experience, it provides the foundation for a pilot's future skills and his attitudes as a pilot. For this reason, it is important that the correct techniques, skills and attitudes are taught and used in aircraft operation. The PPL allows the student to act as Pilot in Command (PIC) of most single engine, piston-powered, fixed-wing aircraft during the day, in Visual Meteorological Conditions and to carry passengers. The PPL is for private use only and no financial reward may be gained for flying.

AGE NOTICE

Minimum age to start course:  16 years

Minimum age to get licence:    17 years

When beginning your PPL training, you can only be sent on your initial solo on reaching the age of 17.

ASSESSMENT

According to JETSTREAM Aviation Academy internal regulations, before admission, an applicant shall have sufficient knowledge of English to facilitate the understanding of the theoretical instruction of the course. The applicant shall demonstrate his knowledge by a pre-entry assessment test of the English language.

THE MEDICAL EXAMINATION

Immediately after making the decision to train for your Private Pilot Licence, JETSTREAM will book the medical examination for you.

TRAINING

The course consists of theoretical, flight and simulator training.

Theoretical Training consists of 126 hours of classroom and self study training. Classroom lessons take place at JETSTREAM’s Training Centre located at Athens International Airport. The theoretical course seminars are arranged in 4-hour evening lessons. There are nine subjects:

Air Law – Aircraft General Knowledge – Flight Performance And Planning –Human Performance And  Limitations – Meteorology – Navigation – Operational Procedures – Principles Of Flight – Communications

Simulator Training is done in our ELITE S923 FNPT II MCC and takes place at JETSTREAM’s Training Centre.

Flight Training is done by  Diamond DA 40 single engine aircraft and is performed at Megara Airport.

The minimum flight training required consists of 45 hours of flight time, which includes 25 hours of flight with an instructor ("dual") and 10 hours of flight without an instructor ("solo"). The difference may be either solo or dual time. 20 hours of briefing time are included. Additional training is sometimes required depending on the individual progress made throughout the training and this is assessed by means of a number of progress tests which are incorporated into the flying. These are designed to identify any weak areas of performance and must be addressed before the flight training can progress efficiently. By benefiting from airline-grade flight instruction and quality control procedures, JETSTREAM students attain a high, first-time flight test pass rate, in the PPL flight check.

The official Hellenic CAA written examinations must be passed prior of taking the final Skill Test which then marks the completion of the course. The pass mark of 75% may be obtained in a maximum of three attempts per exam.

The Flight Training is divided in two (2) phases:

In Phase 1 the applicant shall do exercises up to the first solo flight.

  •  Preflight operations, mass and balance determination, aeroplane inspection and servicing.
  •  Aerodrome and traffic pattern operations, collision avoidance.
  •  Control of the aeroplane by external visual reference.
  •  Normal take-offs and landings.
  •  Flight at critically slow airspeeds, recognition of and recovery from incipient and full stalls, spin  avoidance.
  •  Unusual attitudes and simulated engine failure.
  •  A pre solo progress test conducted by the JETSTREAM Aviation Academy Chief Flight Instructor

In Phase 2 the applicant shall do exercises up to the first solo cross – country flight.

  •  Maximum performance (short field and obstacle clearance) take offs, short field landings.
  •  Flight by reference to instruments, including the completion of a 180 degrees turn.
  •  Dual cross – country flying using external visual references, dead reckoning and radio navigation aids, diversion procedures.
  •  Crosswind take-offs and landings.
  •  Abnormal and emergency procedures and manoeuvres, including simulated aeroplane equipment malfunctions.
  •  Operations to/from and transiting controlled aerodromes, compliance with air traffic services procedures, radio telephony procedures and phraseology.
  •  Knowledge of meteorological briefing arrangements, evaluation of weather conditions for flight and use of Aeronautical Information Services (AIS).
  •  A pre solo cross – country progress test conducted by the JETSTREAM Aviation Academy Chief Flight Instructor.
  •  At least 5 hours solo cross – country flying including a flight of at least 150 NM with full stop landings at two aerodromes different from the aerodrome of departure.

The Flight Examination for the PPL comprises a flying Skill Test, with a minimum duration of 1:30 hours on a single engine aeroplane. Before the licence can be issued the applicant must pass the Aviation English Language Proficiency Test  at JETSTREAM's Aviation Academy Examination Center approved by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority.

You need to fly 3 hours as pilot-in-command per year. However, to carry passengers, you must make 3 take-offs and 3 landings in any 90 day period prior to the flight. These hours can be done with JETSTREAM aircraft which we provide to our clients who have been trained with us.

STARTING THE PPL TRAINING WHILE AT SCHOOL

If you are thinking of making a professional career in aviation, you need to aim at qualifying as an Airline Commercial Pilot as early as possible. If you can finish your PPL whilst still at school, you will be ready to qualify for your Commercial Licence in the first year after you graduate.

COMBINING SCHOOL LESSONS or DAY JOB

The PPL ground school is mainly conducted over weekends or in the evenings during the weekdays. The lectures are given at weekends, usually on a Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 4pm and during the week from 5pm to 9pm. Times for these lectures can be arranged between the group of students and instructor to suit your needs in terms of your time availability.

FAMILIARISATION FLIGHT

Whether you are just looking to experience the thrill of piloting a light aircraft or considering the PPL course, the trial flight lesson is the ideal way to start.

The lesson itself lasts about one hour and comprises a pre flight briefing, 30 min. in the air and a debriefing. You will sit in the left-hand seat "the captain’s seat", whilst your Hellenic CAA approved instructor will take you through the flight.

Your Instructor will explain the controls of the aircraft and how they work. During the flight you can concentrate on learning how the airplane flies or be more relaxed and see the site around the Saronicos gulf.

Your flight will be conducted in a Diamond DA40; a four-seat piston engine aircraft, which flies at more than 220 km/h.

The Familiarisation Flight Lesson costs 160.00 Euro. You will receive a JETSTREAM certificate of your first flight.
